      When calculating "on the margins" you want to find the extra gain (or sty) of doing one more/less of something...the graph is showing hours in units of 2 hours, so we take the loss in the grade and divide by 2 to fins how much his grade drops when he spends only one more hour playing tennis.

    This doesn't explain how you found the sigma.

    • @MelanieHildebrandt_Economics
      @MelanieHildebrandt_Economics Рік тому

      Hi Zach, I didn't find the sigma, instead I used an approximate for it, which was given in this particular problem for my students. When the sigma (or standard deviation for the population is unknown), we calculate a t statistic instead AND we use "s" (or standard deviation for the sample) as an approximate for sigma. With problems you'll be asked to work for a class, they will either supply "s" or give you the data needed so that you can 1st calculate "s". If you to the 1 minute mark of my video, I outline what my students were given for this problem, including "s". Because I specifically made these videos to go along with a textbook and other materials that I use for courses I teach.

    why title it “unknown” standard deviation if you already had it in the beginning? or am i just confused?

    • @MelanieHildebrandt_Economics
      @MelanieHildebrandt_Economics Рік тому

      You don't have the standard deviation for the population in this problem. Instead you use the standard deviation (s) from the sample as an approximate for the population

  • @JOHNSMITH-ve3rq

    Forgive me, but I am rather confused. The title describes the explanation as instruction on calculating a t statistic when sigma is unknown. Yet sigma does appear in the video -- its origin and derivation not shown, and unknown to me. Can you please enlighten those of us who were unfortunately unable to follow this?

    Uhm ma'am what if you're asked to calculate unemployment rate but you're not given unemployed people?

    • @MelanieHildebrandt_Economics
      @MelanieHildebrandt_Economics 3 роки тому

      You are likely given information to determine which group is unemployed, but they may not specifically be labeled "unemployed". As an example, if a problem states, "out of the adult population, 100 are not working, but actually looking for work"...then those 100 are unemployed.
